Get Computer Name & BIOS Serial Number Using PowerShell
In IT Support, we often need to quickly identify a user's computer and verify its hardware asset information. PowerShell provides a simple way to retrieve the computer name and BIOS serial number.
1. Get Computer Name and BIOS Serial Number
$env:COMPUTERNAME (Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS).SerialNumber
OR
Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SerialNumber
Example output:
- DESKTOP-ABC123
- 5CD1234XYZ
$env:COMPUTERNAME → Displays the Windows computer name.
Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS → Retrieves BIOS information.
.SerialNumber → Extracts the device's serial number.
2. Display Only the Serial Number
You can also use:
Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SerialNumber
Example:
SerialNumber ------------ 5CD1234XYZ
Why is this useful in IT Support?
This quick command can help technicians with:
- Asset identification
- ServiceNow/ticket updates
- Laptop/Desktop inventory
- Hardware troubleshooting
- Warranty or replacement verification
Tip: Instead of checking the device physically for the serial number, PowerShell can retrieve it within seconds—provided the manufacturer has populated the BIOS/UEFI serial-number field.
